  • Storytelling workshop - The Orton Dobby

Tue 01 Nov 2022 Rebecca Willoughby

This morning the children had a Westmorland Dales storytelling workshop with Asby Endowed school. First of all they heard two local stories including the Orton Dobby.

Our children then had a workshop to tell the tale of the Orton Dobby by acting it out. They had to play the parts of people that had been in the story or as judges. Did they think it was a true ghost story or one that had been made up?

At the end they told ghost stories of their own.

  • Pop in and Play

    Mon 10 Oct 2022

All children up to the age of 5 and their families are welcome to our next Pop in and Play.

We look forward to seeing you!

  • Miscreants in the mud

    Wed 21 Sep 2022

This afternoon the children joined with children from Asby Endowed school for a Wilding Theatre workshop with Miscreations. On Thursday they will be seeing the show but had to help prepare it and provide some sounds.

The children had to prowl and howl like wolves whilst hunting for natural objects to make music with. Then they were recorded using these items and their voices to make a lullaby for the play.

Next, they had to imagine they were passing through a tree and down into the earth. They went through a door and along a passage where some of them had stories of creatures they met on their journey.

Finally, children were able to volunteer to make some cob for a giant’s head. This will be part of the stage for the play. They had to mix soil, sand, water and straw. This was then slapped onto a frame.

  • Sporting success for Crosby at Morland tournament

    Fri 16 Sep 2022

It's been a long time coming but on Wednesday night, both our sporting teams made the semi-finals of an inter-school tournament.  The successes came at the Morland Shield.

The netballers reached the semis of their tournament and were finally knocked-out after a nail-biting shoot-off that followed a goalless draw with Bolton.  This came after a league win against Warcop and a draw against Morland.

The footballers went a step further, reaching a thrilling final against Warcop which was eventually lost by a single goal with the last kick of the match.  The team had previously beaten Long Marton in the semi-final and had wins against Culgaith and Morland and a draw with Warcop in the early rounds.

Well done to all our sporting heroes.  Can we take it a step further next time?

The whole school had a wonderful Forest School Day today to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. Here are some of the things we have been doing:

  • Planting trees - improving the environment for future generations

    Thu 24 Mar 2022

Yesterday the children carried out important environmental work which will benefit future generations.  A large number of native tree saplings were planted in the field adjoining the northern end of the playground.  The plantation is temporarily shielded by fencing while a hedging of hawthorn grows around it.  This will provide a shelter belt for animals as well as protection for the saplings as they grow.  Future generations of children will enjoy visiting this nature area when studying habitats and eco-systems in science lessons.  At the same time, the children also filled in areas of hedging to the rear of the school to complete a natural border to the premises.

We're extremely grateful to the Dent Family for allowing us to create this nature area in their field and to the village tree planting group led by David Evans and Drew Woodward.  David and his wife Sylvia, who is a governor in our school, supported the children as they planted the trees yesterday.

Planting trees helps our environment in many ways:

    • They absorb carbon to help fight the climate crisis
    • They produce oxygen for us to breathe and absorb pollutant gasses
    • They help prevent flooding - large trees can consume up to 100 gallons of water per day
    • They create habitats for all sorts of wildlife from squirrels and bats to bees, owls and woodpeckers
    • They improve soil quality by reducing erosion, improving fertility and adding moisture to the ground

Today's work complements further environmental action: an orchard of fruit trees is currently been planted in place of a previously derelict area of playground to the western side of the school.

The children of Crosby Ravensworth CE Primary School are proud to play a small part in helping the community tree-planting group with their aim to enhance the landscape of the parish for future generations to enjoy.  The group have been supported with grant aid from Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership, which you can read more about here.

  • Hunting for treasure

    Wed 23 Mar 2022

The children really enjoyed working with a metal detector at after school club last night. They had a great time….an hour wasn’t long enough apparently!!!!

Firstly Simon showed some of the coins and things he has found.

Everyone then had a go. They all found “treasure.” Varying from a 1p coin to a watering can head and even a toy car.

Many thanks to Simon and Ginny, Jill and Karen for their support.
